The Phoenix was built in 1910 and started screening in 1912 – with a film on the Titanic. The cinema has fared rather better than that unfortunate liner!

Older cinemas survive elsewhere in Britain but these were converted from theatres. The Phoenix was refashioned in Art Deco style in 1937 – see the impressive panels within – and is now run by an independent trust.
